This series of posts will track the progress of 5 courageous hobbyists as they embark on that most epic of quests: To build and paint a Warhammer 40,000 army from scratch! Each month you’ll be able to follow along as their armies grow from bare plastic sprues to fully painted units of battle-hardened warriors. Once the armies are ready they’ll meet on the battlefield to decide who’s worthy of claiming the title of Greatest WAAAGHlord for 2020!<\/p>\n

Month 5 has come and gone and it’s looking like this is going to be the last of the lockdown posts. If you’ve been enjoying the home photography make the most of it while you can as we should be back to normal from next month onward!<\/p>\n\n\n

Alex:<\/strong> So my plan for this month was to be working on Terminators but as is only right and proper I started off by going on a tangent and actually painted up an Inquisitor: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coteaz brings with him a suite of different psychic powers and utility abilities and as a member of the Ordo Malleus will fit in perfectly with the Grey Knights. Most importantly he won’t turn off the Masters of the Warp ability, unlike other allies, and doesn’t take up a detachment slot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that I got back on track and completed some more additions to the Ghost Knights. I really enjoy painting these guys and the colour scheme is a nice contrast to the rest of the army which should look great when it’s all deployed on the table. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Tale<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

At this point it felt a bit weird to have gone through a month without painting anything in actual Grey Knight colours so I spent the rest of my time on a normal Terminator for the second squad: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 9th edition rapidly approaching army composition is a bit up in the air at the moment so I’m just going to play it safe for next month and keep going with some more Terminators. Fingers crossed we should also be able to play some actual games soon aswell! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhaz:<\/strong> So apart from the big GW reveal for Necrons(!!!); the most interesting thing that happened to me this month is I treated myself to some new filing tools and some lovely silver paint for the airbrush. I tested out my new kit on my last unit of 10 Immortals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Tale<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I’m super happy with how smooth the silver base paint was. They’re definitely my favourite of the three units of Immortals. I also got to put my painted models to use this month with a 1000 point game against my partner. He won but we did later discover he had ‘accidentally’ been cheating for the whole game.

I also finally finished my unit of Tomb Blades, completing the final 3 of 6. The last time I ran Tomb Blades in a practice game, the unit of 3 was taken out very quickly. Hopefully with a larger unit we can take advantage of the Reanimation Protocol and survive a little longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So all I have left for my army is two more Doomsday Arks and a Doom Scythe. I wanted to get the last Doom Scythe done next month but GW is out of stock at the moment unfortunately so I will probably be working on the Doomsday Arks. So much doom…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dean:<\/strong> By the throne its that time again.

For this month I got my 40k heroes Captain done. The heroes series are fun models and I realised the Captain was a solid fit in my Terminator line. I wish I\u2019d been able to use more of the minis but they just aren\u2019t a close enough fit to what I\u2019ve done so far.

Here’s the hero of the month that adds another 119pts to the force:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now is the epic saga of how my army got twist turned upside down.

After last months pledge I committed myself to a Landraider and more Terminators. What could go wrong right? Well a short story later I\u2019m not getting one. After two weeks the ebay seller I ordered it from went \u201cwoops\u201d and I’m now awaiting a refund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So whats next if the raider support is out?

Well it means if I can’t roll out the heavy support I\u2019ll draft in some cavalry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not really wanting to move my dark angels outside the Deathwing theme, and with no sign of Landraiders coming back in any time soon the army will have to adapt and overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I really love the new Ad-Mech designs and decided to draft in the new Terror Pigeon and Robo-doggo squads. The new models look absolutely great, and if there’s going to be an allied army why not go for the biggest weird new thing rather than the obvious choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next month I\u2019m pledging to get them built;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 boxes of the cavalry and a Flappy Flap Murder Birdie. I\u2019m holding off pledging to paint them as I\u2019m going to need to find a colour scheme that i like. Mars is the only official scheme that’s not terrible. However once the units are built there’s going to be a period of testing to see what colouring works to see if I can crack a more unique flavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul: For Month Five I’ve finished three Starweavers which will carry my Fusion Pistol Players and Death Jesters into battle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally having three Death Jesters in a Starweaver was an indulgence without any specific role in my army. This has changed with the new Psychic Awakening rules released in White Dwarf.  The new rules give Death Jesters some strong traits and relics which makes three of them in a Starweaver a good harassment unit with the ability to clear chaff effectively, snipe characters and turn off overwatch on enemy units. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Month Six I’ll be working on the three Troupe Masters, the Solitaire, a second Shadowseer and the last remaining Death Jester. Which will then be all of the characters complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that I’m left with 15 Players which I might not actually paint depending on what happens with the the point changes following the release of 9th<\/sup> Edition. If I decide not to go ahead with those then in the future I’ll be looking to work on another indulgence for casual games: 15 Howling Banshees and Jain Zar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob:<\/strong> So month 5,461 has passed as I have lost count since the lockdown began in the Middle Ages. Back then Sigmar was peaking through the long hall window catching a glimpse at what his future held. I was the guy who\u2019s shoulders he was standing on\u2026. but less of the format of other games and on with the completed pledge!

I give you my Thundefire Cannons! Along with their converted tech crew:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used the conquest doctor frame and added some marine bits with a few extra guns, flamers and the overhead cutter beam. It really gives you a quarantine skin fade, as in, the skin drops off! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With these additions I can give my guys even more pew pew power from a distance and hidden locations. To go with the theme of being stalkers\/hunters to cut the head off any advancing enemy forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next month my pledge is going to be 3 squads of 3 Primaris James McAvoy that can shoot round corners. (Its a film reference to Wanted) or otherwise known as Eliminators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
